Claire Daviss

Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior, Cornell School of Industrial and Labor Relations

Claire Daviss is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Cornell School of Industrial and Labor Relations, studying gender, labor markets, and organizations. Dr. Daviss's research advances interactional and organizational theories of social stratification through a focus on disparities in hiring decisions. She uses exciting new data sources — administrative and experimental — to improve the field's measurements and theories of hiring inequality. In ongoing work, Dr. Daviss asks, does how we hire affect whom we hire? More scientifically speaking, she investigates how structural elements of the hiring process moderate the influence of biases based on gender, race, and other social categories in hiring decisions. She aims to make theoretical as well as practical contributions, advancing best people management practices for companies seeking to improve fairness and inclusion. Her work has been published in Organization Science, Social Science Research, and Sociological Methods and Research.

Dr. Daviss graduated with a MA and PhD in Sociology from Stanford University and a BA in Ethics, Politics, and Economics (cum laude) from Yale University. In her free time, she enjoys running medium-to-long distances, singing old country tunes, and getting bossed around by her highly opinionated dog.
