Amy L. Johnson

Amy Johnson is a cultural, computational, and medical sociologist whose research focuses on mental health and illness. She investigates how the social and cultural context influences mental health experiences and decision-making and how mental health operates as a cultural framework. In her current book project, she uses computational text analysis of newspaper and social media data to explore changing understandings of mental health and illness and the boundary between them. Johnson's work with the VMware Women’s Leadership Innovation Lab uses longitudinal interview and survey data to examine young people’s beliefs about gender inequality. Her work has appeared in academic journals including the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Social Science & Medicine, Journal of Health and Social Behavior, and Social Problems. Johnson received her PhD in Sociology from Stanford University in 2023 and her BA in Sociology and Spanish from Wellesley College in 2017.
